Happy Wednesday Everyone!
I have been a little sporadic about the blog lately and I am sorry but I updated it today and there are lots of great questions you can talk to your kids about.
Please take a look http://misstracy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/
I want to thank you all for bringing your child and attending the Proud to be an American performance earlier this month. I am so proud of all the kids. They did a wonderful job sharing all that they have learned about the United States and our government. We spent about 4 weeks in class reading and doing activities about the US and the Government.
As you can see we began a quick 2 week study of the Civil War. In 3rd grade we just touch on this topic. Students just learn that there was a war over states’ rights and slavery and that the south wanted to become their own country. They also learn about a few of the famous people for that time. We don’t dive into the battles or the specifics of it all but they will in 5th grade.
After Thanksgiving we will switch back over to science and be using the scientific process to learn about the properties of sound and light.
Things to remember:
-Cursive packets are coming home weekly for students to work on
-Students should be studying their facts and reading every night
-Turkey Projects are due on Monday
-Painted Sky Craft Fair is this Saturday
-Painted Sky Night of Lights is on Dec 5th
FINALLY – a note is coming home today about the 3rd grade Kids Who Care Yard Sale. Please take a minute to talk about this with your child. We are going to be using the proceeds to help out our Adopt a Family.
-Kids Who Care Sale is on Dec 12th
What is Happening this Week??
Please read the long term assignments list at the top of the blog. Every night students should be reading for 20 min, studying their math facts, and working on their cursive packets.
***What cursive letters are you working on this week? Can you write your name in cursive?***
Students also have a turkey project that they are working on.
Reading - Civil War on Sunday
While reading this book we have been working on many fiction and non-fiction objectives. Students are identifying character traits of Jack and Annie, making predictions about the story, and answering questions about what is happening. We have also been using a dictionary and a thesaurus to look up synonyms for vocabulary words in the story.
This book has also been a big part of our Civil War study. As we are reading we are pulling out non-fiction FACTS about the Civil War. Students are recording their fact findings in their journals.
***Tell how Jack and Annie are different in how they act.***
***Who is Jon the drummer boy?***
***What organization or bureau did Clara Barton start?***
Social Studies - Yesterday we began 9 different centers on famous Civil War leaders. Students are using a variety of Internet resources to learn about different leaders of the time. They are creating "trading cards" for each of the famous people.
***Who was fighting in the Civil War?***
***What are 2 reasons they were fighting?***
***Who was the president of the United States?***
***Who was the president of the Confederacy?***
***Compare the Confederay and they Union. ***
Math - We are really working on our facts right now. Students were given flash cards to be studying each night. We are also working on our multiplication facts in class. Students have been writing facts, using flash cards, playing games and singing songs about multiplication. We will be starting chapter 5 very soon but students need to continue to memorize and work on their multiplication facts.
***Do you know all your 0,1,2,5,9,and 10 facts?***These are the easier ones ;)
***Have you been working on your 3,4,6,7,8 facts?*** These are much harder
Try starting by counting by the number... for example:
3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30
Writing - The focus for this week is punctuation and capitalization. Students are still forgetting to use capital letters when needed. We are practicing this week on editing sentences to fix this.
***When do you use capital letters?***

Ellis Island Day!!!
http://teacher.scholastic.com/ACTIVITIES/IMMIGRATION/tour/
Today we are going to have a special computer time to look at this website about Ellis Island. We are also going to do a VERY FUN simulation as if we were coming to America and going through Ellis Island to immigrate to America.
What is an immigrant?
What is a citizen?
How much money did you need to have to get into America in 1908?
Could you get into America if you were sick?
Did you make it to America today during our simulation? Tell your family about your "Trip".
If you didn't make it why were you shipped back to your country? Did anyone in your "pretend family" make it?
Did anyone in your family pass through Ellis Island?
Comment about Ellis Island on this blog over the weekend and receive extra credit in social studies. :)
