We had a special guest in our classroom this week. Alex can tell you all about it :) A tarantula decided to spend Tuesday night in his mail can. SO... on Wednesday morning Alex was a little surprised when he went to turn in his homework. It was a good thing Ryanna's mom was there because she took the can out to the desert and let little Hairy go.
Item Needed!!!! - Every student needs to bring in an EMPTY tissue box for a project on September 8th.
Thank you to all the parent helpers who have been in the classroom. Your help is so appreciated. I am a better teacher because I have each one of you to help!
Morning Work: In the Write 4 Today assignments we continued working on capitalizing proper nouns, making end marks and most important using there, their and they're correctly. In the Read 4 Today we finished reading the story The Foolish Coyote. Sadly, the coyote was tricked by the blackbirds. *** What is another word for bravery? ***
Reading: We spent this week reading the story The Fruit and Vegetable Man. Students listened to the story on Tuesday and came up with questions they had about the story and its pictures. Some of those questions we were able to answer as we continued reading and others we never figured out the answers to. We also spent time evaluating what we were reading. Finally, today we discussed all the parts to the story. The students completed an assessment on the characters, setting, problem, events, and ending. *** Who were the main characters in the story? *** What happened in the end? ***
Math: We are almost to the end of chapter 1. The test will be next Friday. This week we worked with our calculators and learned how to skip out forward and backwards using a calculator. We also worked on place value and counting money. Here is a problem to try. Also this long weekend, try to use the money skills your practiced in class when you are at a store.
*** Enter 572 Change to 372 How? ***
Spelling: Students were pretested on 5 words. Their spelling list is made from any of those 5 words they missed plus words they have been misspelling in their writing. If your child still did not have 10 words after those 2 options they got to pick the rest of their words. They should have brought home a spelling test of 10 words on Thursday. The test is Wednesday.
Science: This week students finished their cactus life cycle books. They turned out so beautiful. Unfortunately our bean seeds grew mold so we are unable to plant them. However, next week we will look at what would have happened if we were able to.
*** What happens when a cactus turns 50? ***
Today was also an exciting day because we met our kinder buddies for the 1st time. We helped them make apple puppets for "a week". Mrs. Bennett's class is so much fun. We will be back to see them again in a couple of weeks. *** What is your buddies name? ***
Have a wonderful 3 day weekend everyone.

Monday and Tuesday
Hey Everyone - Tomorrow is Picture Day!!! Bring you smiles!
Here is a look at the last two days.
Morning Work: This week we are reading about the Foolish Coyote. He is being tricked by some blackbirds. *** What does the coyote want to learn to do? *** We are also practicing capitalizing names, making end marks at the end of sentences, using the correct form of there-their-they're, and deciding if sentences are commands, statements, exclamations, or questions. *** What does they're stand for? ***
Writing: On Monday we made a list of all the things that we did that day that made us responsible. We talked about things we could do when we get home to be even more responsible. Yesterday we also tasted some burnt cookies. Each student made a web describing how the cookie tasted, felt, looked, smelled, and sounded. Tomorrow we are going to write a paragraph about the burnt cookie.
<<<>> Letter Writing WS
Spelling: We will be getting new words for spelling on Wednesday!
Reading: We are going to begin reading the story The Fruit and Vegetable Man. Today we worked on lots of vocabulary that is in the story. We also discussed these 2 questions: What kind of store would I like to own? and What is something I have done that has made me feel proud? *** What is an accent? ***
Math: Monday we worked on lesson 1.5. We collected data from our class and made a tally chart. We talked about all the things that need to be included when making a chart or graph. Today we did lesson 1.6 on number boxes. We came up with many different ways to name or make one number. *** Can you name 3 names for the number 12? ***
<<<>> Number Boxes WS
Science: Yesterday we created a Life Cycle of a Saguaro book. Students had to look through their Cactus Hotel book and come up with the stages of a Saguaro's life. Then they were able to add pictures to their book.
*** What happens to a saguaro when it is over 60? ***
Computers: Today in computers students posted to our computer blog. They had to answer 2 questions related to what we have been learning in science. Check it out below. Be sure to read their comments!

Another great week for everyone!
Grades will be online over the weekend and all of graded assignments will come home on Monday. Any assignment with mistakes can be corrected and turned back in. Grades that are below a 70% will be corrected in class on Monday or at home Monday night.
Here is what we were up to this week.
Reading/Writing: This week we read the Cactus Hotel. This book goes through the life cycle of a cactus. It also talks about how important Saguaro cactus are to all the animals that live in the desert. They make their homes in living and dead cactus. Student drew a beautiful picture of the desert and use descriptive words to describe their desert scene. We also working on some comprehension questions. Our cookie writing is still going on. We will be editing paragraphs next week on 3 different types of cookies that we have tried.
*** Why is the book called the Cactus Hotel? ***
Math: We are continuing with chapter 1. We are reviewing place value, number grids, tally charts, time, money, and looking through our tool boxes and Student Reference Books. *** What is a glossary used for? ***
Science: This week we talked about what a plant needs to grow. ***What does a plant need to grow? *** We also decided to see if a plant could grow without soil. Student put 4 different kinds of seed into a dish. The soaked them in water for just a minute and poured the water out. Then they sat the seeds over night. Today when the observed them they noticed 3 big differences. *** How were the seeds different? *** We are going to continue watching them and do another project with them next week.
Spelling: Students did not get new spelling words. They will receive words on Wednesday of next week.
Morning Work: Each morning students are completing 2 assignments: Read 4 Today and Write 4 Today. The reading assignment has a short 2 to 3 sentence paragraph and 4 questions to answer about it. The writing assignment either has 4 questions about writing and grammar or over the course of a week the student is asked to organize, write, revise, edit and publish a very short story. On Friday the students were assessed on both of these. Graded tests will come home on Monday.

FUN FUN FUN!!!
Reading/Science: Today we listed everything we knew about the desert. Then our groups got together and made a web about all the different things each of us knew. We had 6 different categories. Finally we looked through magazines to find pictures of different things in the environment.
*** Can you name 1 danger in the desert? ***
*** Can you name 2 plants in the desert? ***
Math: In math today we got to look through our math tool boxes. We talked about how these are tools and not toys. Much of our time was spent reviewing how to tell time on an analog clock.
*** What does the big hand on the clock tell you? ***
*** What does the small hand on the clock tell you? ***
<<<< HOMEWORK ALERT>>>> Clock WS and Math 4 Today Day 2
Computers: We all got to try posting to this blog today. We blogged about ways that we are responsible. You can read the blog below. Some students did not type the captchas correct (or the funny looking letters) and their blog got lost. If they did lose their comment they can try again at home or we will try at school later on.
Don't forget the spelling test tomorrow!

Monday 8-18
It was a great day today!
Morning Work: We started the morning with a new week of Read and Write for today. This week we are writing a short story and learning about the 5 W's. We are also reading a letter from a boy who went off to learn how to be a knight.
*** What are the five W's?***
Writing: We continued our cookie writing today. In our groups we wrote our topic sentence, details and concluding sentence on the store bought cookie we tasted last week.
*** How was this cookie different than that bakery cookie?***
Reading: Today we read a poem about the Saguaro Cactus. The students learned that when we read we need to use good rate, accuracy and expression. The students read and acted out the poem in groups. All the student brought home a copy of the poem. We also highlighted words in the poem that had endings. We sorted the words with endings into 2 categories, ending in s and other endings. Then we found the base word for each of the words.
<<<<< Homework Alert>>>>>> Cactus worksheet - 10 problems - fill in the blanks with the correct word, the one with the s or the one without
*** How do you spell the base word in the work thinner? ***
Math: Today we explored our student reference book. We took a "bookie lookie" all the way through the book. We did a really fun scavenger hunt to find out all different kinds of math information.
*** What do we find in the glossary? ***
<<<<< Homework Alert>>>>>> Links 1.3 If you need help with the homework visit the Everyday Math Site
Monkey Math: We took another fact test today. We will be making flash cards tomorrow.

Friday 8-15
It's Friday!
Today was filled with lots of fun... well not to start but it got better.
To start the morning we took our Reading, Writing and Math Test. We will take these every Friday morning. It is only about 25 total questions and they are things we have been working on all week long.
****Other than someones name, what is another meaning for the word joey?****
After that we talked about the wolf from the Three Little Pigs story. The students discussed all the characteristics of the wolf and decided that he was a bully. Then we talked about all the different ways that people bully other. Everyone made a commitment that they would not bully others and if they saw bulling they would help by telling an adult, asking the one getting bullied to play or getting the one being bullied and go tell an adult.
**** What are the 2 ways that someone can be a bully? ****
In math today we took our number grid a step up. The number grid started at 501 and we filled in numbers all the way up to 1000. We also worked on filling in mini grids or puzzle pieces from the grid.
After Lunch today we took another fact test. Everyone made improvement!
In science today we did an experiment with fruit. We opened up 5 different fruits to find out what the seeds inside were like. Some of the fruit had just a few seeds. One only had one seed and others had MANY seeds. They were all different shapes sizes and colors.
**** What was the difference between the seeds in the cantaloupe and the peach or avocado? ****
After science we packed up and went to see Mrs. Paulson for PE.
Students brought home graded work today. It is theirs to keep at home. Also grades are up online. The log in is your last name and the password is the 8 digit number on the note card from parent night. (It's on the back of the card with my info on it)
Grades: http://www.amphi.com/~ctracy/progressreports/index.html
Students- remember to add a comment to this blog. Answer one of the questions or just write me a note. Also, vote on the poll on the right hand side AND remind your parents to check the calendar for the volunteer schedule.

ONE WEEK!!! Today marked one full week of school and things are off to a great start.
Reading: We read the Three Little Javilians today. Students each made 2 connections to themselves or other stories while reading. Some connected to the coyote being like a big brother or sister, others thought that I was like the Javilians since I play guitar too. We also continued working on our story comparision chart. Tonight for homework students are to read the Three Hawaiian Pigs and the Big Bad Shark and complete their chart.
**** How is this story different from the traditional Three Pigs story? ***
Writing: Today was store bought cookie day. Student worked in groups to use their 5 senses to describe the store bought cookies. We will be writing paragraphs on them tomorrow.
**** How were these cookies different from the bakery cookies?****
Math: Today's focus as on number grids and place value. We worked on counting by 10's starting at all kinds of different numbers. We also started making our place value dragons. They will come home next week for all to see. We also took our 3rd Monkey Math test today. Everyone is doing great at knowing their facts.
**** Count by 10's starting at 17. How about from 123? ****
Science: Students worked in their groups to continue to discuss the properties of different fruits. We will be digging into this all the way on Friday.
**** Have you started to study your spelling words?" ****

Monday - Tuesday - Wednesday 8/11-8/13
We have been very busy these last 3 days.
Reading: We have read three different stories: The Three Little Pigs, The Three Little Wolves, and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. Students have been working on a chart that compares all the different stories. We have been focusing on making connections and the parts of a story.
****The wolf claimed that he was not trying to knock down the pigs houses. What did he say he was trying to do?****
Math: Students have found out that numbers are all around them. We have searched the room for numbers and our own houses. We have made number grids and are reviewing place value.
***** How would you expand the number 37 ****
Spelling: Students took a pretest of all the priority words. The words they missed have become their spelling words for this week. Tests are on Wednesdays
****Ask your child... When is the spelling test? ****
Writing: How would you describe a bakery fresh chocolate chip cookies? This week we are working on how to use our senses to describe different kinds of cookies. Students will be writing paragraphs and comparing different cookies.
****Give one descriptive sentence telling what the bakery fresh cookie was like.***
Science: On Wednesday we took a look at some bean pods. Students wrote down the properties of the pod. Then they opened it up and found SEEDS inside. Finally the counted up the seeds and we compared all the different pods and amount of seeds.
**** How many seeds were in your pod?****
**** Did you know there were seeds inside?****
**** In science what does property mean? ****

Friday 8-8-08
WOW! What a great day!
The second day of school was filled with lots of learning. We started the day off learning about what makes each of us special. We wrote a sentence about what makes each of us special and drew a picture of ourselves.
In math today we used our homework from last night to make a math project. The homework required us to find numbers that describe ourselves. We then took the information and made a math number quilt.
We began our science unit today. For the next few weeks we will be learning about plants. The activity we did today required the students to:
-estimate how many seeds were in a cup.
-sort the seeds into types
-count the seeds
-add together all the individual seed counts to find the total number of seeds
-describe the properties of the seeds (color and shape)
-estimate how many seeds would be needed to make a 6 inch line
-line the seed up to make a 6 inch line
-estimate how many seeds would weigh the same amount as a little bear
-use a balance scale to weigh the seeds and the bear
This was a fun project that required the students to work in groups of 4 to 6 kids.
At the end of the day today the students got to meet Mrs. Paulson the PE teacher.
If you look to the blue section on the side of this blog you will see a spot that says "QUESTIONS??". To get a special prize on Monday at school, click on the work comments right below this blog and answer one of the questions from the blue section. See you all Monday!!

Thursday 8-7-08
The first day of school! Today we had lots of fun. We started off the morning taking a tour of the school. We found the restrooms, the teachers lounge, the office, the nurse, the police officers office, the music room, the lunch room, the pe room, the art room, the playground, where to line up AND our own classroom.
Next we took a tour around our own classroom.
After the tour I, Miss Tracy, told the class all about me. I showed everyone pictures of me and my family and friends and shared stories about myself. Then everyone in class wrote a letter to me so I could learn about all the students in our class. We even used the correct format for letter writing, heading, greeting, body, closing, signature.
Next we took a dive into our reading books. We played a fun word game called rivet and then read a story called Miss Nelson is Missing. As we read this story we talked about how the students in the story were behaving and how we could be like them and NOT like them.
Finally, it was time for lunch and recess. After lunch we jumped into math. We counted by 1's, 2's and 5's forward and backward. We also looked all around our room for numbers. For our homework tonight we have to find out different numbers that tell about ourselves.
When math was over we packed up our things to go to music. We met Mrs. Marcy our music teacher for the year. We listened to the Olympics theme song that we will be able to hear on Friday night during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics.
It was a great day!!!
