Blog 'bout a Book Sept 3rd
Hey Everyone!!! Time to blog about a book you have been reading. Actually it does not have to be a book. It can be anything you have read in the last week during your 20 minutes of reading. A book, article, contest form, cereal box, menu, magazine, newspaper, an Internet article, an online book, or just about anything you can read count as 20 minutes of reading.
Now it is time to tell me about what you have read.
We have been learning about how to monitor our comprehension, or "STOP, what did we just read?" One of the things we are learning is that if you ask questions about what you are reading, while you are reading, you will understand it better.
SO.... Tell me :
1. The title of something you have read
2. Tell me a little about what you read
3. Write 2 questions you have about your reading

Student Letter:
Welcome to Miss Tracy’s third grade Monkey Class! My name is Miss Tracy and I am your 3rd grade teacher. You can probably tell from the name of our class that I love monkeys.
I hope you all have had a wonderful summer break. Mine has been very busy. I taught summer school for the whole month of June. The 4th of July was the start of my break. I had a nice bar-b-que at my parents house and spent the day swimming in the pool. Break didn’t last long because the next week I spent a week at Technology Camp learning how to do lots of cool computer programs with kids. I hope we can try some this year.
Finally I got to go on a vacation. I traveled to Pensacola, FL and spend 3 days camping on the beach. I got to ride in a boat and go deep sea fishing. We rode over 8 miles out into the ocean and I caught 3 fish. It was so much fun. I also visited New Orleans and was able to see how the city was rebuilding from Hurricane Katrina, which hit New Orleans 4 years ago. My favorite part of New Orleans was listening to all the music. I love to listen to music and live band and I also play music myself. When I am not teaching this is one of my favorite things to do.
I have a very exciting year planned for us and can’t wait to meet you. We will begin our 3rd grade journey together on Thursday by getting to know each other. We will also begin learning about plants and desert. This unit is guaranteed to be filled with tons of fun and learning.
I would love to hear from you and get to know you before the 1st day of school. You can leave me a message on our class blog. Just visit our class website at www.amphi.com/teachers/ctracy and click on the blog. I will even write back to you if you leave a comment! Be sure to only use your first name and last initial when signing the blog. We want to use proper internet safety, which we will be learning more about this year. You don't have to have a google account. Just click on the bubble next to the "Name/URL" and type your first name only and last initial.
I will see you very soon.

Summer Time
2008-2009 class, I hope you are having a great summer. It was such a wonderful school year and I enjoyed having you all in class this past year. I am going to miss you all next year. It is summer time now and I hope you are all being safe and having fun. Because I am a teacher I can't help but remind you to keep reading. Read anything! You can even read your cereal box or the TV guide or your magazine on how to pass you favorite video game. JUST READ!! Also, don't forget to keep up on those multiplication facts. I just bought some flash cards for my summer school students at Walmart for $.98! Less than a $1!!! Ok, I am done lecturing you. :) See you around school next year.
What am I up to this summer???
I am teaching 3rd grade for the month of June at Harelson. I am looking forward to having all of July off. I am going to a week long technology camp to learn even more cool things to do with kids and computers. I am also taking a week long trip to Pensacola, FL to go deep sea fishing and camping. I have never been before so I am a little scared but very excited.
Next Year's Students:
If you are wondering if you are in my class next year look for class lists on the front window of the school on July 31st. I am hoping to mail all my new students a letter around the 28th of July.
If you are thinking of going school supply shopping here is the supply list for all of the 3rd grade classes at Painted Sky. Remember that if you have supplies from last year and they still work, you can use them and you don't have to spend the money on new ones. This works great for things like scissors and backpacks.

Painted Sky is having a “Nature Shop”
You are going to visit our online Nature Shop!
http://paintedskynatureshop.blogspot.com/
When you are working at the Nature Shop you will have many different jobs. Your goal is to try and help our customers
- spend all their money
- get all the items they want
- be happy!
1. You have a kindergartener with $10 to spend. Kindergarteners like LOTS of things so they want to get at least 5 items. Help them pick out the at least 5 things they could get for under $10. They can get more than 5 and you want them to spend as much money as you can.
2. There is a 5th grader that has $25. The have already pick out some items. Estimate how much they have spent so far so you know how much more they can spend. Here what is in their basket
- wind chime
- shell bracelet
- $15 bookends
Estimate how much money do they have left to spend?
Now help them pick out items to help them spend the rest of their money.
3. One of your friends from 3rd grade is shopping. They have $15 to spend. So far they have …
- A grab bag
- sand animal
- bottle of silver
Estimate how much money do they have left to spend?
Now help them pick out items to help them spend the rest of their money.

Jan 5 to 9
It is time to ROCK!!!!!
This week we began our study of Geology. Over the next 5 weeks or so we will be learning about rocks, minerals, and the earth.
Reading - This week we read a book called Science Close-up Rocks. This book gave us a first look at the rock cycle. First we learned that there are rocks called igneous. What are igneous rocks? Then we learned about sedimentary rocks. Do you remember what a sedimentary rock looks like? Finally we learned about a 3rd type of rock. When igneous and sedimentary rocks are under extreme heat and pressure they can change into this 3rd type of rock. Do you remember what it is called? Do you know what it is called when they change? As we read about these rocks in our book we also read an article about each type to give us a closer look at them. Students had to make a list of specific examples of each type of rock.
We also spent a day reading in our FOSS Science Stories book. We read about how rocks are used to make many famous memorials and monuments around the world. Can you name any of them and what type of rock they are made of?
Science - What is a mock rock? It is a very cool name and we spent a lot of time working with them. First we found all of the properties of our mock rock. What is a property? What unit did we use to weigh our mock rock? What unit did we use to measure our mock rock? Next, we used picks to take apart our mock rock. We separated the ingredients into piles. BUT ... we had a pile of sediment and we didn't know what was in it. We decided to add water to the sediment and see if anything would float up to the top. We were very suprised the next day when the water was yellow. Something had dissolved into the water. We decided to pour a little water out into a dish and let the water evaporate. We are hoping that something will be left in the dish on Monday when we get back to school.
Math - We are continuing our study of place value. We have been reading and writing big numbers all the way up to 1,000,000. We also learned to play a game called number top-it or snap. Can you read these numbers outloud? 36,008 - 97,506 - 109,056 - 682,231
What is the smallest 6 digit number that you can write? You can only use each number one time.
Writing - What is a topic sentence? This week we looked at a bunch of passages. In each one we tried to find the topic sentence. We also looked at a list of details and wrote our own topic sentences.
Spelling - What is a homophone? We played games... we wrote sentences... we worked in groups... we worked by ourselves.... but I think we all know what a homophone is now. :) YIPPIE!!!
Project!!! - Don't forget to work on your rock project that you recieved on Friday. It is due on Tuesday Jan 20th.
3rd quarter Grades are online!!!! Make sure you are not missing any work AND see if there are any assignments under 70% that you can correct and turn in for a better grade.
FINALLY - A special welcome to our student teacher for this semester. Ms Kelley comes to us from the University of Arizona. We are all very excited to have her as part of our class. She comes with lots of teaching experience! She will be with us until the end of April. She will be posting a little bio about herself this soon... so stay tuned.
