It has been a fun week getting back into the swing of things after AIMS. We started back up on our normal morning work of DOL and Math.
We will start back up on spelling this week. I will give out words on Monday.
In reading we began reading a story called Sarah Plain and Tall. The kids seem to really be enjoying the story. We are working on vocabulary and using a dictionary with each chapter. Students are also predicting, identifying story element and answering lots of why and how questions. They are also comparing the environments of the sea (Maine, where Sarah lived) and the prairie (where the family Sarah went to live with lived). Students used t-charts and Venn diagrams to compare plants, animals, and other factors. The story goes great with the beginning of our science unit.
In science this week we began our environments unit. On Monday we created environments in terrariums. We planted different seeds and each table group got to choose "how" they planted the seeds. They were able to choose how they would plant the seeds and how much water they would give them. We are now watching to see how their decisions worked. We learned a few new words: terrarium, organism, environment, and environmental factor.
On Wednesday students were able to choose an environment that they would become an "expert" on over the next few weeks. We began learning that every environment has living and non-living factors in it. Students then researched the living and non-living factors in their environment. I sent home a letter asking for help from home with the environment projects that we will be creating in class. Please let me know if you can help out. A copy of the letter is on the blog titled "environment project".
In math this week we continued to work on multiplication. This is a common theme between now and the end of the year.
Now time for extra credit... Students, post a comment to this blog answering one of the questions to the side and telling me what you voted for in the poll AND why and you will get 10 extra credit points in reading.
Have a great weekend!

Hi Miss Tracy,
ReplyDeleteDo you know if Mr. Ritter will come at the end of the year and play his drums for us and play one of his songs he knows? What teacher will I have for 4th grade? My little sis in Ms. Celayas class will your class come at the end of the year and visit us?
Lauren and Sarah S:)
Hey Sarah - I left you a note on the Environments Projects blog.... you should look at the comments on that blog. I don't know who your teacher will be for 4th grade but you will find out before this summer. They are all cool teachers. Did you know that Mrs. Celaya and I used to share and office? We had rooms next to each other. I think she is a really cool teacher. I know you are having lots of fun Lauren. You guys have a great night and a fun Sunday. See you at school Sarah!

Hi, Miss Tracy
ReplyDeleteIn Sarah Plain and Tall there are Sarah, Papa, Anna, and Caleb.
I voted for Flat Stanley because it was funny. My favorite part was when Stanley slid under the door and scared his brother. It would be fun to scare my sister Kelsey!

Hey Keeley - I liked Flat Stanley too. I think it would be cool to slip under doors. You would never get your finger caught in them if you could just go under. Have a great Monday!
