Spelling Test Day!
We took our 2nd spelling test today. We also pretested the 5 new words for next week. Grades on online from todays test. Tomorrow student will bring home a list of any words they missed and their new words. They will have 10 spelling words to study for next Wednesday. KIDS - Don't forget to study and remember you can go to www.spellingcity.com and type your words in. Then you can play all kinds of games with them.
This morning students worked on writing about their favorite meal. Yesterday we came up with ideas of what our favorite meal is and today we started writing. There are some great story beginnings. ***Can you think of one thing you want to add to your story? ***
We read a short text this morning about the Cherry Blossom Festival that is celebrated in Japan. ***How long does the festival last? ***
In reading we worked more with the vocabulary words for The Mighty Saguaro. Students become the teachers and experts on their words and taught the other students. We also had a little boy/girl competition on putting the table of contents in order. ^^^ HOMEWORK^^^ Read pages 4 to 8 tonight and answer the 4 questions in complete sentences.
***What does transpire mean? ***
Math was a little of a review today. We looked at frames and arrows. These are basically number patterns. Students worked as a class to find the rule of different patterns and to fill in the missing numbers ^^^ HOMEWORK^^^ Links 1.11
*** What's the rule? 29 26 23 20 ***
In class today we looked at the website http://www.raz-kids.com/ . Students can log on to this site using tracy3rd. Tuesday Sept. 2nd
Today is the first day of September! *** What number month is September? ***
Today we began our journey through a book called The Mighty Saguaro. We looked at all the different parts of the book. We also used the smartboard to sort elements of fiction and non-fiction. Students were able to identify that elements like story, setting, characters, humor and events were from a fiction book, where elements like charts, graphs, diagrams, table of contents, heading, and caption were from a non-fiction book. Students were also assigned a vocabulary word to look up in the glossary. They had to write the meaning of the word and try to draw a picture of the word.
*** What was the word you looked up? *** What 2 things does a glossary have? ***
"Every person that you know and every place that you can go and every thing that you can know.... you know they're _____________, you know they're ________ " ***Can you fill in the blank to the cool School House Rock song we learned today? ***

Wed - Fri 8/27-8/29
We had a special guest in our classroom this week. Alex can tell you all about it :) A tarantula decided to spend Tuesday night in his mail can. SO... on Wednesday morning Alex was a little surprised when he went to turn in his homework. It was a good thing Ryanna's mom was there because she took the can out to the desert and let little Hairy go.
Item Needed!!!! - Every student needs to bring in an EMPTY tissue box for a project on September 8th.
Thank you to all the parent helpers who have been in the classroom. Your help is so appreciated. I am a better teacher because I have each one of you to help!
Morning Work: In the Write 4 Today assignments we continued working on capitalizing proper nouns, making end marks and most important using there, their and they're correctly. In the Read 4 Today we finished reading the story The Foolish Coyote. Sadly, the coyote was tricked by the blackbirds. *** What is another word for bravery? ***
Reading: We spent this week reading the story The Fruit and Vegetable Man. Students listened to the story on Tuesday and came up with questions they had about the story and its pictures. Some of those questions we were able to answer as we continued reading and others we never figured out the answers to. We also spent time evaluating what we were reading. Finally, today we discussed all the parts to the story. The students completed an assessment on the characters, setting, problem, events, and ending. *** Who were the main characters in the story? *** What happened in the end? ***
Math: We are almost to the end of chapter 1. The test will be next Friday. This week we worked with our calculators and learned how to skip out forward and backwards using a calculator. We also worked on place value and counting money. Here is a problem to try. Also this long weekend, try to use the money skills your practiced in class when you are at a store.
*** Enter 572 Change to 372 How? ***
Spelling: Students were pretested on 5 words. Their spelling list is made from any of those 5 words they missed plus words they have been misspelling in their writing. If your child still did not have 10 words after those 2 options they got to pick the rest of their words. They should have brought home a spelling test of 10 words on Thursday. The test is Wednesday.
Science: This week students finished their cactus life cycle books. They turned out so beautiful. Unfortunately our bean seeds grew mold so we are unable to plant them. However, next week we will look at what would have happened if we were able to.
*** What happens when a cactus turns 50? ***
Today was also an exciting day because we met our kinder buddies for the 1st time. We helped them make apple puppets for "a week". Mrs. Bennett's class is so much fun. We will be back to see them again in a couple of weeks. *** What is your buddies name? ***
Have a wonderful 3 day weekend everyone.

Monday and Tuesday
Hey Everyone - Tomorrow is Picture Day!!! Bring you smiles!
Here is a look at the last two days.
Morning Work: This week we are reading about the Foolish Coyote. He is being tricked by some blackbirds. *** What does the coyote want to learn to do? *** We are also practicing capitalizing names, making end marks at the end of sentences, using the correct form of there-their-they're, and deciding if sentences are commands, statements, exclamations, or questions. *** What does they're stand for? ***
Writing: On Monday we made a list of all the things that we did that day that made us responsible. We talked about things we could do when we get home to be even more responsible. Yesterday we also tasted some burnt cookies. Each student made a web describing how the cookie tasted, felt, looked, smelled, and sounded. Tomorrow we are going to write a paragraph about the burnt cookie.

About Me
Miss Carol Tracy
This is will be my 6th year teaching 3rd grade at Painted Sky. Before teaching here I taught music for 2 years. I went to college at the University of Arizona. GO WILDCATS!!! I am a huge AZ basketball fan. I went to high school at Amphitheater High and middle school at La Cima. Before moving to Arizona I lived in Nebraska for 9 years. I have really loved living in Arizona for the past 15 years. I was actually born in Phoenix but only lived there for 2 1/2 months. My extended family lives on the east coast in The Washington DC area. As a kid my family visited there every summer. I try to go back there a visit when I can. I live in the middle of town, near the U of A. I live with my big brother, Kevin and my VERY cute puppy Oreo. My mom and dad live here in Tucson also. My mom sometimes comes to school and helps in the classroom. My birthday is December 3. I love monkeys, music and smiley faces. I enjoy listening to music on the radio and listening to live bands. My favorite color is green. Music is one of my favorite things to do. I love to sing songs and play the guitar and keyboard. Many of you know that I play in a band on the weekends! I love singing.
