Thursday and Friday Sept 11-12

We have started a new unit in class. The kids seem to be really excited to learn about history. The unit is on explorers. Over the next 4 weeks we will be learning about 12 different World Explorers. The unit will encompass reading, writing and unit time.
*** What does it mean to explore? What does it mean to discover? What is a European? ***

Quick Read Assessment: Students read a comparison story about city and towns. They had to answer 6 questions about the comparison. *** Which is bigger a city or a town? How do you know that? ***

Quick Write Assessment: Over all students were able to use commas in a list, capitalize titles, and use the correct form of your/you're. Students are still struggling with what a verb is and struggling even more with what a helping verb is. In two weeks we are going to focus in on verbs so the students can understand this better. To help out look at the blog from Wednesday to see an example.

Reading: Today we finished working on a reader's theater called Coyote Learns His Lesson. The students went to kinder and 1st grade classrooms today to perform their play. Here is what some of the teachers said!
Mrs Celaya - They were wonderful! Thank you for doing this with your class.
Mrs. Bennett - They did a great job. I was impressed….
Mrs. Green - My kids loved it! Come back any time!
Mrs. Weil - They did great. One kid was so nervous at first...very cute!
Mrs. Grunensfelder - The group that came to my room did an AWESOME job. Thanks.
Thank you teachers for letting us perform for you and for all your wonderful comments!

Math: We are working on mastering our basic facts and using those facts to help us with harder problems. For example: we know 3+5=8 then we can do 3+25..... by adding 20 more to our original answer. This concept really helps when we begin to try and do mental math or math in our heads. *** What is 14-6? Then what is 84-6? ***

Spelling: Students brought home new words on Thursday. They stapled them into their assignment books so they would not get lost. The test will be on Wednesday. Just as a reminder, students are pretested on 5 words. Any words they miss on the pretest are added to any words that they missed on their last test. Those missed words become their spelling words. I also pick words out of the classroom writing and homework writing and add those words to the list. If after all that students don't have 10 words they get to pick the rest of their spelling words from the dictionary.

Reminder: Use http://www.raz-kids.com/ to read stories online and take the quizzes. Visit http://www.spellingcity.com/ and enter in your spelling words to play games and study them. ALSO, visit the class links page to play math games or visit sites on explorers.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. The weather is getting so nice and beautiful. Try and do something fun outside.
Kids: Leave a comment and you may have a suprise waiting for you on Monday!

Parents: I would love to hear any comments you have in regards to the school year, this blog, the website links, grades online, etc... Please drop me a comment or an email anytime.

  7. Hi Miss Tracy,
Thanks so much for having such a great classroom web page and blog. It is a fun way to connect school with home life. Rhyanna and I love to look up her on-line grades and talk about how she is doing in school. The grades are great because I know what she needs help on when she is learning something new. The blog is a wonderful way for Rhyanna to learn the basics of internet and how to connect with her class. She gets to see how others comment and I can look on the computer and know what you are discussing during class. Anytime we have a problem your class page or blog has great links to find additional help for her school work. Keep up the great work.
    Anna
